Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding Benefits
As your doula and Certified Lactation Counselor I offer essential support to nursing mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey. My role covers various aspects that can improve your nursing experience. Here are some key areas where I can provide support:
1. Education and Information
Supplying evidence-based information on nursing techniques and the advantages of skin to skin to increase and maintain your supply using oxytocin while you hold and cuddle your newborn.
Clarifying the anatomy of breastfeeding and the process of milk production.
Providing resources for additional reading and local breastfeeding groups to support you with community and in free classes if you desire.
Sharing information about the use of the breast pump, when to use it, how often and of course taking you through how to set it up and keep it clean, fit your parts as well as sharing other methods of passive collection should you wish to avoid the pump until it is needed. My aim is to make pumping a straightforward and hassle-free experience, allowing your body to maintain its natural rhythm as it aligns with your baby’s growth and health. We also go through storage of breastmilk, building a “stash” and the amounts of milk your baby should be consuming at different stages of their life. Should you choose or need to use formula I can also assist in sharing different options based on your baby’s unique digestive system.
2. Practical Support
Helping with latching techniques to ensure your baby feeds effectively while supporting you both as you learn to navigate learning how to nurse without discomfort or at the expense of nipple damage or any other complications.
Assisting you in finding comfortable breastfeeding positions that encorage adequte supply and demand and allow your baby to get the most from each feed.
Offering support for handling common breastfeeding issues, like engorgement or sore nipples, preventative measures to avoid clogged ducts, mastitis or other nursing complications as you begin your journey with your baby and supplying remedies and if need be referrals should those issues arise.
3. Emotional Support
Offering encouragement and reassurance as your milk develops and syncs with your baby’s needs as they grow and go through cluster feeds during their development.
Listening to any concerns and addressing breastfeeding-related fears or anxieties that may come up for you.
Helping to nurture a positive breastfeeding relationship between you and your baby.
4. Partner Involvement
Encouraging partners to engage in the breastfeeding process using several different methods. Sharing information on when to introduce a bottle and how to both nurse and bottle feed at the same time by choosing the correct bottle and nipple.
Suggesting ways for partners to support the nursing mother in a number of different ways.
Educating and supporting partners during the breastfeeding journey to truly bring together a team in all aspects of bringing your newborn home.
